Leeds United can take plenty of encouragement from their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, even if the result will sting after they came so close to taking something from the Emirates.

Daniel Farke’s side were competitive in the first half and grew into the contest, with their pressing causing Arsenal problems. James Justin rewarded that effort in the 55th minute, finishing after Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cut-back to put Leeds ahead.

The response, however, was swift. Riccardo Calafiori equalised seven minutes later, and Leeds couldn’t stop Arsenal from capitalising on a loose ball in the box. Bruno Guimaraes then came off the bench and made the difference, firing home from the edge of the area in the 70th minute.

Arsenal’s depth ultimately proved decisive, but Leeds did not simply roll over against one of the league’s strongest sides. They pushed the hosts, created opportunities and stayed in the game until the final whistle.

The unbeaten run is over, but this was far from a performance without positives.

Bruno Guimaraes impressed by Leeds United at the Emirates

The former Newcastle midfielder made a real difference after coming on in the second half, adding drive and creativity to the Arsenal midfield.

His driven shot from outside the box ultimately proved the difference, as Leeds left the Emirates Stadium empty-handed despite a solid performance.

Guimaraes praised Leeds and has insisted that their performance showed why every game in the Premier League is tough and nothing can be taken for granted.

He stressed the importance of the win despite the performance and is happy to take the plaudits for scoring the brilliant winner.

The Arsenal star said on TNT Sports: “Yes, we know the Premier League is very tough. You know, you look at Leeds; they have a great team.

“That was a very tough game, and we are glad we could get the three points today.

“But it was very tight today, and any time we can get the three points is very welcome for us.

“Today the mentality was bouncing back. It feels unbelievable to score this important goal, and I am very happy.”

Leeds can hold their head high

Leeds United may have lost their unbeaten record at Arsenal, but Daniel Farke will have seen enough to believe his side can compete with the Premier League’s best.

Going to the Emirates was no small achievement, especially against a team of Arsenal’s quality. James Justin’s goal showed Leeds could turn their off-the-ball work into a genuine attacking threat, while their energy and organisation made life uncomfortable for the hosts for long periods.

The frustrating part was how quickly the game turned. Riccardo Calafiori equalised just seven minutes after Justin’s opener, and Bruno Guimaraes put Arsenal ahead in the 70th minute. Leeds couldn’t quite manage the key moments, but they weren’t outclassed.

There is a difference between losing because a team cannot compete and losing because a stronger opponent finds a way through. This felt closer to the latter. Leeds must learn from the details that cost them, but the performance should give them confidence heading into their next game.
