Alan Shearer reveals what changed as Leeds United gave Arsenal a mighty scare

Leeds United will be disappointed not to have taken at least a point after giving Arsenal a serious test at the Emirates. The 2-1 defeat ended their unbeaten start, but the performance offered plenty of evidence that Daniel Farke’s side can compete against the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Leeds showed ambition rather than simply trying to contain Arsenal, and they were rewarded when James Justin put them ahead in the 55th minute. For a moment, an upset looked possible, but the hosts responded quickly through Riccardo Calafiori before Bruno Guimaraes struck the winner in the 70th minute.

Arsenal’s quick comeback will frustrate Farke most. Leeds had worked hard to take control of the game, only to lose their advantage within minutes. Against teams of this quality, concentration has to last for the full 90 minutes.

Still, it wasn’t an embarrassing defeat. Leeds competed, threatened and made Arsenal work for the points. They can take heart from that, provided they learn from the moments that cost them.

Alan Shearer pinpoints why Leeds lost

Former England and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer conceded that Arsenal lacked energy and didn’t play positive football in the first half.

However, he believes momentum shifted once Bruno Guimaraes came on, and Arsenal moved the ball far better after the break, which earned them the three points.

Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “Arsenal moved the ball a lot better in the second half.

“I thought it was all a bit slow and passive and a bit lethargic in the first half, with too many sideways passes – not enough penetration.

“Once Bruno [Guimaraes] came on and moved it a bit better, he scored a great goal. Declan Rice, I thought, was very good in the second half.”

What Leeds do next will be important

Leeds have every reason to be frustrated by their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, but the real test now is what they do next. A spirited performance at the Emirates counts for little if Daniel Farke’s side cannot carry that confidence into the games ahead.

There were encouraging signs. Leeds showed they could press a top side, compete physically and create opportunities, with James Justin’s second-half goal putting them in a position to take something from the game. The problem was allowing Arsenal to respond so quickly before Bruno Guimaraes completed the comeback.

Farke will want his players to learn from those lapses without losing the aggression that made them so difficult to play against. Leeds do not need to abandon their approach after one defeat; they need to sharpen the details and become more ruthless at both ends of the pitch.

The performance has given them a foundation to build on. Now they must turn that promise into points, because in the Premier League, good displays alone will not keep them moving forward.
