Chris Wilder opens door to Leeds target exit: “If this is his last game…”

With Leeds United almost certain to stay in the Premier League, the focus is now on shifting towards the upcoming summer transfer window.

They have already been warned against resting on their laurels, and some have already stressed that Leeds will need to invest heavily as the second season is always harder.

Leeds have already formulated plans to bring in upgrades in key areas of the squad, and they have already started working on certain targets ahead of the end of the season.

Sheffield United’s Gus Hamer is again on Daniel Farke’s wishlist, and he is likely to be available for a cut-price fee due to his contract situation at Bramall Lane.

Chris Wilder indicates Gus Hamer will leave

Gus Hamer featured in Sheffield United’s 2-1 win over Derby County on the final day of the Championship season on Saturday as the Blades finished 13th in the standings.

He has a year left on his contract and is almost certain to move on from Bramall Lane in the upcoming transfer window.

Chris Wilder has lauded the attacking midfielder’s attitude and insisted that he and the Sheffield United fans will understand if he leaves the club in the coming months.

Wilder said on SUTV: “He shouldn’t have played today. He rolled his ankle on Thursday and didn’t train yesterday. He wanted to play today. His attitude has been spot on; Championship Player of the Year last season.

“I said to him when he was coming off, ‘If this is your last game, I really appreciate your efforts over the last 18 months for myself and the football club. I’d love to work with you again, but I will understand’.

“If he stays, then great; if he doesn’t, then he has the recognition he deserves for his efforts. Supporters don’t get it wrong, and their reaction to him at the end tells the story.”

Leeds are always in the market for bargains

Leeds will have money to spend in the summer and will likely spend more than the £100m they forked out last summer to bring in ten new players.

They won’t need a full rebuild this time and could splash out on a few key players if the right opportunities come up.

However, they will always be open to bargains and free transfers, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin has shown that the price tag has nothing to do with what they can do in a Leeds shirt.

Hamer has been a target for Farke since 2023, and with his price likely to drop this summer, it won’t be a surprise if the Leeds manager gets the player he has coveted for years.
