Club surprised by size of Leeds United’s offer for star

The 49ers have pumped a lot of cash into the Leeds United team since their days in the Championship. And ultimately, that has paid off as the Whites prepare for their second season in the Premier League.

However, that has lead to the club walking a bit of a tight rope when it comes to PSR.

Because of the investments, the team had to sell Archie Gray back in 2024, and even this summer, the departure of Pascal Struijk was to help last year’s books. But the defender also wanted a new challenge.

Out of the newly-promoted clubs last season, two took a different approach – Leeds and Sunderland.

The Black Cats spent big money on recognized names and quality players; that paid off as they ended up qualifying for Europe. The Whites also spent over £100 million, but in a different way.

European club ‘surprised’ by Leeds United deal for star player

Instead of huge individual fees for three to four stars, it was spread across.

The Whites averaged around £10 million per player in the last summer window. And Leeds United did get quality, as they landed Anton Stach, Pascal Struijk and Noah Okafor among others.

The 49ers have started off this summer with a huge deal; £34 million for Tarik Muharemovic.

Leeds needed a center back to come in after losing Pascal Struijk and they found their man. The 23-year old will join from Italian side Sassuolo, where he has been a solid performer.

Juventus had a 50% sell on clause for Muharemovic when he was sold to Sassuolo. Per Gazetta dello Sport (relayed by Tutto Juve), the Serie A side were anticipating around £10 million for a deal for the defender.

But Leeds’ £34 million fee will see them pocket around £17 million, which comes as a ‘surprise’ to them.

Muharemovic fee is not a problem

Tarik Muharemovic’s fee should not be a concern to Leeds United or their fans.

The only reason Sassuolo pushed for that price was to increase how much they would benefit from a transfer fee, considering Juventus’ 50% sell-on clause. So that is completely understandable.

But Leeds are paying for a quality player, who has risen through the ranks quickly for club and country.

The Whites have made worse transfer deals in the last few years, but spending this much on a center back who will be with the team long-term is never a bad decision.

If anything, it shows the ambition of the Leeds ownership as they enter a new Premier League season.
