Leeds United moved a big step closer to Premier League safety with a comfortable 3-0 win over Wolves at Elland Road today.
After their victory against Manchester United last week, Leeds came into this game knowing they had a real chance to all but secure their top-flight status for another season — and they delivered.
James Justin got things started in style in the 18th minute with a stunning bicycle kick, and just two minutes later, Noah Okafor made it two, finishing beautifully from a Brenden Aaronson cross.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a third from the spot after he was awarded a penalty in injury time, which only added more sheen to the scoreline.
Despite the comfortable nature of the win, pundits have still found a reason to moan about the Leeds victory.
Former West Ham star slams Leeds United penalty decision
Don Hutchison has slammed the referee for awarding the penalty to Leeds, deep in stoppage time, against Wolves at Elland Road earlier today.
The former West Ham star insisted that it was a very soft decision from the referee, and while it was not good defending, it wasn’t enough for a penalty.
However, he conceded that VAR could not overturn the decision as it was not a clear and obvious error.
Hutchison said on Sky New Zealand: “It’s not a penalty for me. Hugo Bueno puts his body across, and it’s good defending.
“Calvert-Lewin looked favourite to get there, Bueno was second favourite, but there is not enough there for a penalty. It’s never a pen for me.
“It’s soft, but there is not enough there to overturn it. When you watch it back, there is contact, and once the referee on the pitch has given it, VAR are not getting involved.
“It’s not a clear and obvious error, in my opinion, though I wouldn’t have given that. I don’t think Bueno has done much wrong there.”
The Whites fans can celebrate the rest of the season
With Premier League safety all but wrapped up, Leeds and their fans can finally enjoy the run-in, and there’s still plenty to get excited about.
There are home fixtures against Burnley and Brighton to come, along with trips to Bournemouth and Tottenham, before they round off the season away at West Ham.
But the real focus now shifts to Wembley, where Leeds face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final later this month, a huge occasion they can fully commit to.
A place in the FA Cup semi-final alongside the comfort of top-flight survival is more than enough to get the Leeds supporters buzzing.
