Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu has been exceptional for the Whites this season, with the Welshman featuring in 31 of the 34 games Leeds have played in the Premier League this season up to this point.
After previosuly struggling in the top-flight and being relegated with Sheffield United, the 25-year-old has proved beyond all reasonable doubt that he is, in fact, a Premier League-calibre player.
However, with Leeds looking set to secure their top-flight status for next season, Daniel Farke will be aware that, behind Ampadu, Leeds do not have much depth to deploy in the holding midfield role.
Although Ilia Gruev is typically deployed alongside Ampadu, the Bulgarian would seemingly be Ampadu’s replacement in that role. However, Gruev has recently sustained a long-term injury, and there would likely be doubts as to whether Leeds could rely on him to play such an important role in the side.
In step, Hidemasa Morita.
Leeds United eye move for Hidemasa Morita on a free transfer
Morita, 30, has previosuly been linked with a move to West Yorkshire, with the Sporting Lisbon midfielder becoming a free agent this summer.
A recent report from the Daily Mail suggests that United have rekindled their interest in Morita, who has won 40 international caps for Japan, after unsuccessfully pursuing a deal for the player last summer.
Morita is said to be willing to commit to a move to Elland Road should Farke’s side avoid the drop back down to the Championship.
The report claims that Leeds view Morita as someone who could bolster their midfield and provide “experienced competition” for Ampadu, meaning that if the Whites’ captain is not at his best next season, he could find himself on the bench if Morita signs.
This type of competition for positions will be needed if United want to establish themselves amongst the midtable Premier League sides, and although Ampadu has been incredible for Leeds, he is no exception to this rule.
Data suggests Ethan Ampadu was impressive against Chelsea
Despite Steven Gerrard criticising the United captain whilst on commentary for the game, the data suggests that Ampadu was impressive at Wembley against Chelsea.
- Ampadu won seven out of the 12 duels he contested against his former club
- He also won two tackles for Leeds as the last man, as well as two clearances, one interception and one blocked shot
- 48 out of the 55 passes Ampadu attempted were successful (Sofascore)
Whilst Ampadu would undoubtedly still be Leeds’ first choice even if Morita signed, the increased competition for his position may mean Ampadu has to elevate his game to even higher levels, which can only be good news for Leeds fans.
