Leeds United could face a fight to land one of their January transfer targets, as a rival club takes steps to protect the future of a player who could become available on a free transfer next summer.

The Whites are understood to be keen to strengthen their defensive options and have identified an opportunity to secure a deal without paying a significant transfer fee. However, the situation is becoming more complicated, with the player’s current club showing little concern about the growing interest from Elland Road.

A fresh development in Portugal suggests Leeds may have to move quickly if they want to get their man.

Porto open contract talks with Leeds target

The player in question is Zaidu Sanusi, whose contract with Porto expires at the end of the season.

Leeds have been linked with the 29-year-old and are reportedly keen to finalise a deal in January rather than risk losing the opportunity to sign him altogether. His contractual situation makes him an attractive option, particularly if Porto are prepared to let him leave before the summer.

However, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Porto have opened talks with Sanusi over a new contract.

The Portuguese giants are not said to be particularly concerned about Leeds’ interest and remain confident that the defender will agree to extend his stay at the club.

Leeds may have to accelerate their transfer plans

Porto’s confidence could be a problem for Leeds. If Sanusi commits his future to the Portuguese club, the opportunity to sign him on favourable terms could disappear.

The Whites will therefore have to decide whether to step up their interest and make a serious move in January or risk seeing their target extend his contract.

Sanusi’s experience and availability on a potentially affordable deal make him an interesting option for Leeds, but there is little point in pursuing a transfer if Porto can convince him to stay.

For now, the situation remains open, but Portugal’s message is clear: Porto has no intention of letting one of its players walk away without a fight. Leeds may have to act decisively if they want to win this particular transfer battle.
