Leeds United handed £40.1 million boost

IMAGO / Action Plus

Arguably Leeds United should really be playing in the Premier League right now.

They had an excellent season in 2023/24 and amassed a huge number of points and it is almost unheard of for a team so good not to make the top two of the Championship, but they paid the price for a sluggish start falling behind Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

They would make the play-off final against Southampton, but couldn’t find the necessary cutting edge to defeat the Saints and saw Premier League promotion slip through their fingers.

This led to many raising financial concerns over the club due to the fact they would not be receiving the big payouts that come with Premier League promotion, but the Whites have navigated this very well and look like they could secure promotion this season.

They are currently third, but level on points with second place Burnley and just three points behind Sunderland at the top and their is a feeling that Daniel Farke’s side will only get better and promotion will come, but what if it doesn’t?

Leeds United handed financial boost

Leeds United have been handed a boost with a report from the Times revealing they will receive a payment of £40.1 as parachute payments increase by 10% meaning the Whites have been given a financial boost as they look to secure promotion at the second attempt.

This comes as Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock has assured fans that parachute payments will not be scrapped.

“We absolutely don’t want (parachute payments) to be abolished,” declared Peacock as per Leeds Live. “We recognise they have an important part to play. We also recognise they can place inflationary pressure (on clubs) but it will be for the regulator, through the work they do, to decide if they are an issue and if they should be looked at through that (backstop) mechanism. But we don’t think it makes sense for them to be excluded.”

This could also benefit Leeds in the long run, should they get promoted it will give them the necessary safety net to properly pursue success in the Premier League.
