Leeds United star handed major boost amid future doubts

A lot of young players have had contrasting careers since joining Leeds United.

The club have signed a lot of young talent over the years. Especially under Victor Orta who targeted young stars from youth teams across Europe. The trend continued well into 2021, where the club assembled some of the most talented players in the Leeds United under 21 side.

Over a three year span, Leeds United had Archie Gray, Leo Hjelde, Lewis Bate, Mateo Joseph, Darko Gyabi, Sonny Perkins and Sam Greenwood playing for their Premier League 2 side.

Fast forward to 2024, and a whole host of them have left the club or are on their way out. Archie Gray eventually made the first team and after his breakout season, was sold to Tottenham. Mateo Joseph has also broken into the first team and is now a first team player.

Sam Greenwood is out on loan, and Lewis Bate and Leo Hjelde have left the club.

One player currently in limbo at Leeds United is Darko Gyabi. The midfielder arrived at the club the same year Leeds lost Kalvin Phillips. Gyabi arrived at the club with a huge reputation and was expected to immediately play first team football.

After years of not playing first team football, the midfielder moved to Plymouth where he impressed. He return to the Championship side this season on another loan.

Now, Darko Gyabi has received a welcome boost as he continues to figure out his future. The midfielder has been called up to the England U21 side for this international break. Gyabi was set to join the England U20 side but has now been moved up a level. England U21s have two away friendly internationals coming up, the first against Spain in Cadiz on Friday and one game against Netherlands in Almere on Monday.

England call up could benefit the club

Gyabi’s England U21 call up is a huge boost for the player as well as Leeds United. It means he is still highly rated in the country. After starring at the U20 World Cup last year, his value has gone up. His impressive performances on loan at Plymouth will no doubt have drawn interest from other clubs.

With the first team picture at Leeds United unclear, Gyabi could find himself at another club next year and get a decent fee. The 20-year old could find himself on a similar path as former Leeds United star Leif Davis.
