Mikel Arteta admits Arsenal ‘lucky’ to beat ‘incredible’ Leeds United

Leeds United will rue the missed opportunity at the Emirates, but the 2-1 defeat should not erase the positives from an encouraging display against Arsenal.

For much of the first hour, Daniel Farke’s side looked capable of upsetting the odds. They created promising openings before the break, with David Raya forced into action, and came out after half-time with greater purpose. James Justin’s 55th-minute finish rewarded that pressure, giving Leeds a lead they had worked hard to earn.

The disappointment was how quickly the advantage disappeared. Riccardo Calafiori equalised seven minutes later, and Bruno Guimaraes completed Arsenal’s comeback in the 70th minute after coming off the bench.

Leeds ultimately paid for a brief spell in which Arsenal found another gear. The hosts’ quality from the bench made the difference, but the visitors showed they could unsettle a title contender on its own ground.

Farke will want a better result next time, but there is plenty here to build on.

Mikel Arteta left impressed by Leeds United

The Arsenal boss has said Leeds showed why they are where they are so early in the season.

He lavished praise on Leeds’ organisation and willingness to run, and he believes their threat from set pieces is something to marvel at.

The Spaniard conceded his team were lucky not to concede in the first half and believes Leeds are a testament to the Premier League’s quality and competitiveness.

“First of all, we spoke about the challenge ahead, against a team who hadn’t lost a game and they fully deserve to be where they are”, Arteta said on TNT Sports when asked about Leeds.

“They are extremely well-organised.

“They are physical and very committed to what they do. They had moments to run; they had a threat, and in set pieces, they are incredible in the way they attack and believe in the conditions to attack the ball.

“They could have punished us in the first half. They have individual quality, and they are in a good moment. They are a testament to the league.”

Arteta is right; Leeds are incredible

Leeds may have lost 2-1 at Arsenal, but Daniel Farke should be proud of what his team produced at the Emirates. There is a big difference between being beaten by a title contender and being completely outclassed, and Leeds showed they belong in this company.

The Whites didn’t travel to north London just to sit back and hope for the best. They pressed with intent, competed for every ball and created problems for Arsenal before James Justin put them ahead in the 55th minute. For a spell, Leeds looked capable of delivering a genuine shock.

Arsenal’s response ultimately proved decisive, with Riccardo Calafiori equalising before Bruno Guimaraes completed the turnaround. But the result should not disguise the quality Leeds showed or the courage with which they approached the contest.

Farke’s side are still learning at this level, and these games can accelerate that process. If Leeds can bring this intensity and belief to more winnable fixtures, they have every reason to be optimistic. The defeat hurts, but this team has character.
