Roman Egan-Riley: Everything we know about Leeds United triallist

Leeds United are focused on attracting young talents to their academy as they look to build a strong conveyor belt of players for the first team. The Whites have a history of promoting youth to the first team and Archie Gray, who left for Tottenham last summer, is one of the prime examples. Leeds have a world-class academy that even competes with the facilities of a few Premier League sides and can snare young players away from the top flight. Tottenham’s 18-year-old defender, Roman Egan-Riley, is undergoing a trial at Leeds hoping to earn a contract with the Whites. It is one more sign of Leeds’ ability to attract young talents from even top-flight teams.

Daniel Farke’s first team are focused on earning automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season as they push towards trying to right the wrongs of last season.

However, behind the scenes, the Leeds hierarchy are concentrating on the club’s overall development, including expanding the stadium. They are also focusing on improving the academy to attract the top young talents.

The Leeds academy have a long history of producing players and several big names have emerged out of the club’s youth facilities over the years.

Their academy remains an attractive destination for several young players, and even youngsters from Premier League academies are interested in attending Thorp Arch.

Roman Egan-Riley is currently trying to impress the Leeds United coaches during a trial as he pushes to earn a contract with the Yorkshire giants.

Roman Egan-Riley joined Tottenham just 18 months back

The 18-year-old defender is expected to sign a contract with Leeds if he manages to impress the coaches in the club’s academy in the next few days.

The Manchester-born youngster has been rated highly from an early age and was previously with the Manchester City academy.

Tottenham believed they pulled off a coup when he convinced the centre-back to move to London and join their academy in the summer of 2023.

He impressed the Spurs coaches enough to sign a professional contract with the North London club in January 2024 and was expected to progress through the ranks soon.

Egan-Riley made 10 appearances in the Under-18 Premier League last season for Tottenham but after a half-dozen appearances this season, he is keen to explore other opportunities.

He is yet to make his first-team debut at Tottenham and is still nowhere close to breaking into Ange Postecoglou’s squad at this stage of the season.

Egan-Riley is now looking elsewhere and Leeds have emerged as an option as they have a top academy and have a history of promoting youth to the first team.

Postecoglou has received some criticism for not giving youngsters a chance at Spurs and the teenager may see Leeds as a better pathway to first-team football.

The teenager is still on Tottenham’s books for now but that will change if he manages to impress the Leeds coaches and earn a contract at Elland Road.

He will still have to graft hard to get a chance in the Leeds first-team

Egan-Riley is prepared to try his luck at Leeds after struggling to get a chance at Tottenham under Postecoglou but it won’t be easy at Elland Road as well.

Leeds already have a few centre-back options and even if the teenager joins the Whites this month, he is unlikely to get a chance straightaway.

He will probably link up with the Under-21 squad in the hope of catching the eye of the first-team coaches in the next few months.

Daniel Farke is focused on getting Leeds promoted to the Premier League and is unlikely to throw a youngster into the heat of a promotion battle.

The 18-year-old should hope that he can do enough to ensure that he gets to link up with the first team squad during pre-season next summer and impress the manager then.
