Contracts across Europe have expired this week, including the ones of some players at Leeds United. The Whites already knew what they were up against entering the summer.

Securing the future of Ethan Ampadu was the club’s priority according to Paraag Marathe.

The club captain has signed a new four-year deal to remain at Elland Road. After that, the expectation was for more contracts to be renewed as pre-season approaches.

The Whites confirmed that Meslier would be leaving the club after they opted against giving him a new contract.

Alex Cairns, Karl Darlow and Sam Byram were offered new deals but so far, none have been confirmed. Cairns has reportedly agreed to stay, but it is yet to be officially announced.

World Cup goalkeeper speaks on Leeds United links

The goalkeeping situation at Elland Road has become a bit complicated following this week.

Karl Darlow is officially a free agent, and is not under contract at Leeds United. It has been reported that Manchester United and Everton are keen on signing the veteran this summer.

That would leave Lucas Perri as number one heading into next season – something the club is not keen on.

Leeds have been linked with goalkeeping targets since the end of the season. And more recently, the Whites have targeted some keeper currently at this summer’s World Cup.

Sweden keeper Jacob Widell Zetterström was impressive, despite his side’s exit in the round of 32.

Following the defeat, he was asked by SVT Sport about his future, including links to Leeds United.

“That’s not something I really think about. Right now, I’m disappointed that we lost and emotional that we’re out.” Zetterström

Fotboll Transfers also asked the 27-year old about his future after this World Cup. This is what the keeper had to say.

“I don’t usually pay too much attention to rumours. I’ve been in this bubble for a while now, fully focused on the national team, and now I feel like I need to take a few days to relax.”

Leeds should not expect a quick resolution

The goalkeeping situation at Elland Road is quite urgent, but does not look like it will be resolved soon.

And when it comes to Derby County keeper Jacob Widell Zetterström, fans should not expect anything soon. He is coming off the back of a World Cup, so his priority will be to rest before making a decision in pre-season.

Leeds and other clubs across Europe have already anticipated potential transfer deals being dragged till after the World Cup.

With Karl Darlow’s future in the air, fans will have to be patient as the Whites find a solution to their current problem.
