Leeds United have secured a place in the Premier League next season. The 49ers can now get to work on improving the squad in order to have another smooth campaign.

Their recruitment over the last summer helped the team immensely; most of the first team additions had immediate impact in the team across the course of the campaign. Club sources have revealed that the recruitment team is working on potential targets ahead of the summer transfer window. With the Whites safe, between now and the end of the season, they have financial benefits to fight for – the higher they finish, the more money the club will receive in merit payments. It is already setting up to be an expensive offseason, with the club set to navigate a £62 million bill due to bonuses and wages.

Midfielder rejects Leeds United approach

A few weeks ago, it emerged that Leeds United had serious interest in some Wolves players after the game at Elland Road. With Rob Edwards’ club already relegated, they would be forced to sell their star players heading into the summer. The Whites were heavily linked with defenders Ladislav Krejci and Santiago Bueno, as well as forward Mateus Mane.

Joao Gomes emerged as another potential target, with reports suggesting that the Whites were ready to pay a record fee for the Brazilian. Journalist Pablo Oliviera has given an update on the midfielder’s future, reporting that Gomes has rejected multiple clubs including Leeds. Zenit Saint Petersburg, Atalanta and Galatasaray were also snubbed, with the Wolves midfielder having his eyes set on a move to Atletico Madrid. Reports also claim that talks are advanced between the two sides, with a £38.5 million fee suggested.

A move to Spain to challenge for the La Liga title, and Champions League football were said to have swayed Joao Gomes, who is now keen to work under Diego Simeone.

Club need to address urgent situations first

Aiming for Joao Gomes is admirable for the 49ers, but this summer will need a very different approach. It has already emerged around Elland Road that clubs in England expect most transfer deals to be completed after the World Cup. Some teams will be hoping to hold on to their stars in case their performance in the summer tournament increases their value.

Which means June and July would not see much activity between teams in Europe. Leeds United have some key issues to address before they even start preparing transfers. Daniel Farke’s contract is on the table, as well as Ethan Ampadu and Pascal Struijk among other key players. Resolving these issues quickly will help the 49ers have a less complicated summer window.
