Leeds United are pursuing several transfer targets as they look to strengthen their squad following a solid 14th-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League.

Daniel Farke has made no secret of his desire to see the club show ambition in the market, and Leeds are expected to focus on improving several key areas of the team during the summer window.

At the same time, the club are not only thinking about the short term. Leeds are also keen to recruit some of the brightest young prospects available, with a view to building a strong pipeline of talent capable of breaking into the first team over the next few years.

Leeds already have a deal in place to snare a youngster away from Manchester United this summer, and they are now pushing to sign another prodigious talent.

The Whites invite Cai McGunnigle to Thorp Arch

The Scotland Under-17 forward has emerged as a target for Leeds United for the upcoming summer transfer window.

According to Football Insider, Leeds have invited Cai McGunnigle for a trial at Thorp Arch with a view to signing him on a permanent contract.

The teenage forward has impressed for Hong Kong FC in the Hong Kong Premier League, and is now on the radar of major clubs this summer.

McGunnigle made a strong impression in the Hong Kong Premier League last season, scoring three goals and registering an assist despite making only eight starts.

He also holds the record of being the youngest goalscorer in the Hong Kong Premier League at just 16 years and one month old.

Leeds are focused on adding top young talent to their academy, and the young Scot could become the latest addition to their ranks.

The 49ers are laser-focused on the academy

The Leeds owners are focused on strengthening the first-team squad this summer as they look to build on the club’s encouraging return to the Premier League and help the team progress further in the 2026/27 campaign.

However, recruitment is not just about the immediate future. There is also a major drive to improve the academy and attract some of the most promising young players available. The goal is to create a pathway that produces more homegrown talent capable of making the step up to senior football.

From a financial perspective, investing in youth development has become increasingly important for Premier League clubs. Many teams have generated substantial revenue through the sale of academy graduates, turning their youth systems into valuable assets as well as footballing resources.

Even if every prospect does not go on to become a first-team regular at Elland Road, Leeds could still see a significant return on relatively modest investments through future transfer fees.

With financial sustainability becoming a bigger factor in how clubs operate, developing a stronger academy could provide Leeds with long-term benefits both on the pitch and off it.
