Leeds United are closing in on the anniversary of the tragic deaths of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, who were murdered in Turkey, where they were following their team in European football. Saturday will mark the 25th anniversary of the tragic incident, and Luton Town are prepared to provide solidarity.
Loftus and Speight were Leeds United fans who were following their team in Europe. Both were attacked and stabbed to death in Istanbul, the night before Leeds were due to play Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup semi-final.
Leeds dedicated last Saturday’s game against Swansea City to the duo and their families were present on the touchline as Elland Road conducted a round of applause ahead of the kick-off.
Saturday will mark the 25th anniversary, and the away contingent of Leeds supporters are expected to pay tribute at Kenilworth Road. Luton Town fans have been urged to join in.
Luton Town supporters group issue a plea ahead of the Leeds United game
Elland Road felt special on Saturday as the fans and the players paid their tribute and respect to two supporters who were tragically murdered in Istanbul.
The away fans at Kenilworth Road will rise up in the 25th minute to again pay tribute to the duo, and Luton Town fans have been urged to join in.
In solidarity to mark a tragic event, the Luton Town Supporters Trust have urged the Hatters fans to rise up and applaud in the 25th minute of the game on Saturday against the Whites.
“Saturday will be the 25th anniversary of two Leeds United fans tragically being killed in Istanbul”, Luton Town Supporters Trust wrote on their X handle.
“Therefore, we would encourage all fans inside Kenilworth Road to participate in a minute of applause in the 25th minute of the match to show respect to all concerned.”
Leeds fans will appreciate the gesture
Leeds are one of the most hated clubs in England, and it is no surprise that Whites supporters are not the most popular of away contingents.
However, some things in life are more important than football, and rivalries need to be kept aside when tragic incidents of death and human cost are being marked.
Can you name the Leeds game these 10 goal celebrations are from?
Leeds fans will love the fact that a powerful Luton Town supporters group have chipped in and urged the fans to get behind the applause in the 25th minute.
Of course, there will always be a minority of fans who are not mature enough to understand the gesture, but the majority of the Luton supporters will likely understand the gravity of the occasion.
