Gabriel Gudmundsson opens up after Sweden boss is sacked amidst World Cup qualifying ‘disaster’

Leeds United players will be reporting to England soon after the international break. There were very good performances by some first team stars, with others having some bad results.

Wales trio Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu suffered back to back defeats at the hands of England and later Belgium. Illia Gruev featured in only one game as Bulgaria’s World Cup hopes ended. Slovenia’s Jaka Bijol bounced back from the last international break, giving two great performances. His side shut out Switzerland and Kosovo in consecutive games.

Gabriel Gudmundsson was also in action for Sweden, who lost both their games during the international break, sparking outrage in the media. Gary Neville and Alan Shearer discussed the team’s woes this week:

“Sweden, they’ve got Alexander Isak and numerous other good players. Bottom of their group against Switzerland, Kosovo and Slovenia.”

After losing to Swizterland and Kosovo in the space of four days, Sweden decided to pull the trigger and sack head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson. The two results this week left them bottom of the group, and they are on the brink of being completely ruled out from World Cup qualification. Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson was speaking about the results and the sacking of Tomasson:

“We players haven’t heard anything, as far as I know”, he told Swedish daily Expressen.

“And nothing about what is planned further down the line, so I can’t say much more than that.”

“I can only be brief and say that we are incredibly disappointed; it is indescribable.

“We did not think ourselves that we would be in this position after four games.

“We are incredibly disappointed. It is actually shameful too,” Gudmundsson added.

Defender has had better fortunes at Leeds United this season

In contrast to his national team’s form, Gudmundsson has quietly been among the best signings in the league this season. Leeds fans were unhappy when Junior Firpo left on a free transfer, but the Swedish left back has been a decent replacement.

Apart from his unfortunate own goal against Fulham, he has been a solid performer under Daniel Farke. Hopefully he can continue his form and help Leeds survive this season.
