James Maddison takes swipe at Leeds over West Ham result – “I knew…”

Leeds United outperformed several established Premier League sides and early-season expectations to finish 14th and well clear of the relegation zone.

The Whites suffered a 3-0 defeat on the final day of the season away at West Ham, but the result couldn’t dampen the mood for the Whites fans who saw their team outperform all expectations.

Leeds fans had their fun at West Ham and mocked the Hammers fans who watched their side get relegated from the Premier League while Tottenham survived with a win at home against Everton.

Spurs did what they had to do on the final day to survive. However, James Maddison could not help himself from having a dig at Leeds for their performance on the final day.

James Maddison takes a swipe at Leeds United

The Tottenham star hammered the referee and VAR for denying him a late penalty against Leeds in the 2-2 draw in north London a couple of weeks back.

Spurs fans have been moaning about that decision for weeks, and Maddison has now taken a fresh dig at Leeds for their performance at West Ham.

He stressed that there was relief after Tottenham beat Everton at home, as he knew Leeds were going to lose against a charged-up West Ham at home on the final day.

Maddison said on talkSPORT: “There was more relief that we had managed to dig deep and get that last tin.

“I knew West Ham would win against Leeds as you could feel it.

“West Ham have great fans, and we knew that place would be rocking and they would get a result, so we had to get something.”

Leeds have exposed teams such as Spurs this season

Despite all the talk of being an elite Premier League team and a ‘big six’ side, Tottenham survived by the skin of their teeth on the final day of the season.

It could have been much worse, as Leeds deserved to win at Tottenham a few weeks back and only a brilliant Antonin Kinsky save in stoppage time earned them a point.

Daniel Farke’s men have exposed teams such as Tottenham, who have been sleepwalking in the Premier League and were saved by some poor promoted teams.

Spurs finished 17th in the last two seasons, while Leeds came up and outperformed them to finish 14th in the Premier League table. The Whites didn’t owe them any favours on the final day of the campaign.

Leeds did not deserve to win at Spurs. Quite the opposite. Spurd were playing against 14 men as usual not the 11 every other team play against. It has been like that for the last 3 seasons!

This seems to be more a compliment about West Ham than a dig at Leeds. There is literally nothing controversial in what Maddison has said. The only controversial comment is to suggest that Leeds deserved to win at Tottenham. They “could” have won, but were probably fortunate over the course of the game to have got a point.
