Leeds United ended their final home game of the season in style on Sunday. The Whites hosted Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton side who had lost just one game in their last seven.
Fans at Elland Road were in anticipation of a great result, especially with how the last home game against Burnley ended. Brighton came out aggressively in the opening minutes of the game.
They created the best chances throughout the first half, but Leeds kept them at bay. Karl Darlow was called upon multiple times, even denying Pascal Gross’ wonderful swerving effort.
The second half was more of the same as the away side pushed for a winner. However, Leeds kept their cool and managed to take the game past 90 minutes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin popped up with a late goal to seal all three points.
Elland Road erupted with celebrations after the final whistle as the players and Daniel Farke collected the applause around the stadium.
Leeds United issue major statement after Brighton game
Before Sunday’s game, Leeds United issued a statement warning fans about ‘use of any homophobic or discriminatory language, chanting, abuse or gestures’. Anyone found guilty would face a stadium ban.
On Monday, the club have now issued another statement on their website, making fans aware of the homophobic chanting that took place.
”Leeds United Football Club are aware of homophobic chanting which took place during Sunday’s Premier League fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion at Elland Road.
”As was communicated before the fixture, any form of discriminatory chanting has no place in football.
”For this match, extra cameras were deployed in stands and anyone identified in taking part in homophobic chanting will face a lengthy stadium ban.
”The club are also aware of disappointing Jimmy Savile chants, however, this does not make other forms of discriminatory and homophobic chanting acceptable.”

Incident ruins Elland Road celebrations
It is very unfortunate that something like this happened during the final home game of the season. Fans came in to watch their favourite team play, and everything went well.
Leeds won the game, beating Brighton, which was a big result on its own. The last minute winner sent the crowd into celebration, and the scenes after the game involving the players and fans was great to watch.
Everything has now been marred by this latest incident, which is not a good look on the club as a whole. The team has done well on the pitch this season, but multiple controversial incidents like these are not very good for the club’s image.
