Leeds United medical scrapped after major development

Leeds United have made a brilliant start to the new season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday, but there is still plenty to sort out in the transfer market before the window closes.

The Whites are still looking to add cover at goalkeeper, striker and left-back, while Daniel Farke would also like to bring in a versatile forward to give him more options in attack.

With just eight days left in the window, Leeds have plenty on their plate, both in terms of bringing new players in and finding new clubs for those who are no longer part of Farke’s plans.

The recruitment team are working closely with several agents to push through both incoming and outgoing deals as Leeds look to finish reshaping the squad before September 1.

Leeds United deal on the verge of collapse after medical scrapped

Leeds United were reported to be in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt last week over a potential deal for 31-year-old goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

The Whites are looking for an experienced number two to provide cover for James Trafford, with Zetterer emerging as one of their main targets.

However, the goalkeeper’s agent has since played down the reports, insisting that Zetterer plans to remain at Eintracht Frankfurt beyond the end of the summer transfer window.

But the goalkeeper arrived in England on Saturday to complete the formalities of the transfer, and an agreement between the two clubs has been expected to be finalised for around £4.3m.

However, the deal may now be off again, as according to German journalist Christopher Michel, Zetterer has returned to training with Eintracht Frankfurt.

It seems the negotiations have stalled between the two clubs, and he won’t be undergoing a medical with Leeds any time soon.

Leeds still need a backup goalkeeper, and they could revive the talks in the coming days. But for now, Zetterer is not moving to Elland Road.

The Whites can’t afford to depend on Alex Cairns

Lucas Perri, who is almost certain to leave Leeds before the end of the window, was on the bench against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

It shows Daniel Farke has little trust in Alex Cairns, who didn’t look like saving a penalty against Manchester United in the pre-season friendly in Dublin.

If Leeds do not revive a deal for Zetterer, they need to find an alternative target as they cannot gamble on Cairns being their backup goalkeeper to James Trafford.

Leeds may not allow Perri to leave if they cannot find a new goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window.
