Leeds United have a deal in place to sign Harry Wilson and are waiting to announce his arrival this week. However, the club have already missed out on certain targets this summer.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed last week that Wilson has signed a four-year contract with Leeds. However, the club are yet to unveil the Welshman this summer.
Leeds are also closing in on a deal to sign Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi, and still hope to agree on a compromise fee with Southampton for midfielder Shea Charles.
However, the club’s targets list had to be trimmed after certain players became out of reach, and one such young player is set to complete a big-money move to a top Premier League club.
Leeds wanted Jeremy Monga earlier in the season; he is set to join Manchester City
Once Leicester City’s relegation to League One was confirmed last season, it became almost certain that Jeremy Monga would be leaving the King Power Stadium.
The 16-year-old winger has been a sought-after talent this summer, and Leeds were among the clubs who were interested in signing him as a market opportunity.
However, it became very clear that bigger clubs were at play for Monga, and a move to Elland Road was never going to happen this summer.
Arsenal felt that they had a deal in the bag for the youngster. However, Manchester City stepped up and hijacked the deal to sign the winger.
They agreed on a deal worth £15m for Monga, and according to Fabrizio Romano, the winger will take the next step of the transfer today.
The youngster is set to undergo a medical at Manchester City today before completing the transfer to the Etihad this summer.
Leeds were in the mix for him earlier in the summer. However, once clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester City got involved, a deal was never going to happen.
The Whites have other priorities
Jeremy Monga was never considered one of Leeds United’s priority targets because of his age and the position he plays. Once several wealthier clubs entered the race, the Whites decided not to pursue the deal any further.
With Harry Wilson on his way in, Leeds do not need another wide player and have other priorities in the market at the moment.
The Whites are looking to bring in a left-footed centre-back to replace Pascal Struijk, another striker and at least one more defensive midfielder this summer.
Monga was a market opportunity, but Leeds were unlikely to pay £15m for a 16-year-old winger.
