Former Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch lead Canada to a draw in their World Cup opener against Bosnia. Ahead of the tournament, the 52-year old has come under a lot of scrutiny.
It seems many have not moved on from his career in England, as it has been referenced multiple times in the past week.
Roy Keane called Marsch ‘useless’ based on what he saw of him in the Premier League, with Gary Neville fiercely defending the Canada boss over his tenure a few years ago.
The co-hosts of the World Cup needed a late equalizer from Cyle Larin in order to grab a point in the opening game.
Group B now looks wide open, with Switzerland favourites to beat Qatar in the next fixture.
World Cup hero tears into former Leeds United boss on live TV
Jesse Marsch played for the US Men’s National Team before retiring and eventually coaching them. He was the assistant to head coach Bob Bradley between 2010 and 2011.
Ahead of Canada’s first game, the former Leeds United boss made a claim that during Bradley’s tenure, the coaching staff had to ”beg” the players to sing the national anthem.
And he riled up the fans of the USMNT by saying that Canadian players did not need to be begged to sing the anthem.
After the draw with Bosnia, former USMNT player Clint Dempsey, who had played in three World Cups, slammed Marsch for his comments.
“He really said that? I can’t take this guy too seriously. When the national anthem played — I wasn’t someone who normally would sing — I would put my hand over my heart and pray to the good man upstairs.
“I’m someone who has bled for this country. I broke my nose playing for this country, I’ve come back from two heart procedures and played for this country.
“I’m not going to take advice from someone who switched to the other side and [is] singing another country’s national anthem,”

Jesse Marsch will always be remembered for his time in England
It might be unfair given the things he has done in his career, but many will remember Jesse Marsch for his time in England.
He came into the league with the club backing him to turn things around at Leeds United. The 52-year old did well to keep the Whites up in the Premier League when he was hired.
In his first full season in charge, he disappointed big time and considering the backing he had, it was seen as a failure.
Hopefully he can continue to make waves in his career, starting with the World Cup campaign with Canada.
